Maps and navigation in China

Maps & Navigation in China

Google Maps doesn't work in China. Learn which local map apps to use and how to navigate the world's most populous country with confidence.

❌ Google Maps in China

Google Maps is not accessible in mainland China due to internet restrictions. Even if you use a VPN, the experience is unreliable and data may be outdated.

Solution: Use Chinese map apps instead. They offer superior coverage and real-time data for China.

🗺️ Gaode Maps (高德地图) / Amap

The most popular navigation app in China. Excellent coverage, real-time traffic, and accurate public transit information.

Features:

  • Real-time navigation for driving, walking, cycling
  • Extensive public transit integration
  • Ride-hailing integration (Didi)
  • Offline maps available
  • English interface available

How to Download:

  • iOS: App Store (may need Chinese account)
  • Android: Download from gaode.com or use APKPure

📍 Baidu Maps

Baidu Maps is another excellent option, particularly strong in northern China. It offers street view (in supported areas) and comprehensive POI data.

Features:

  • Street-level view in many cities
  • Excellent business/restaurant listings
  • Public transit and cycling routes
  • English interface available

🍎 Apple Maps in China

Apple Maps works in China and uses local data providers. It's a good fallback option if you're familiar with the Apple ecosystem.

  • Works without VPN
  • Integrated with iOS
  • Turn-by-turn navigation
  • Less detailed than Chinese apps in some areas

💡 Pro Tips

  • Download before arrival: Get the apps and set them up before your flight
  • Save addresses in Chinese: Have your hotel write their address in Chinese characters
  • Use screenshots: Screenshot important locations to show taxi drivers
  • Offline maps: Download offline maps for areas you'll visit
  • Let locals help: Show your map to locals for assistance—they're usually happy to help
  • Address format: Chinese addresses are written from large to small (City → District → Street → Number)
